Assuming no clerical errors with the key, the next most likely cause is a conflicting installation of Office on the computer in question. If there are, uninstall and restart twice. Next, go to Windows Updates and set it to get updates for Windows and other Microsoft products, then scan for and get all applicable updates, especially anything to do with MSXML and. There are a zillion. NETs and. NET patches and service packs, get 'em all.

Is there any way around this? I have had to re-download before for another of my 3 allowable PCs with no problems and no requirements to purchase another key.

Thanks for coming back to me on this. I think this because when I try to re-download a replacement copy to load unto my new HDD and enter the product key that I had been given originally, MS seems to treat it as a trial product key. Each time I open Word, for example, I get a screen informing me it is a trial and asks to activate it.
When I try to activate it by indicating I have a paid version of the software I again insert the key accordingly but the response comes back to say it is not eligible as a paid product key presumably.
As I said, I have re-downloaded before with this same key about 1. Dan was hinting that as your is an upgrade , it needs something installed which it can upgrade. The "technical upgrade" offer for Office gave you a "Full" copy of Office Unlike the earlier "upgrade" versions that required an earlier "qualifying" version for the upgrade to work, the "upgrade" does NOT need this. We need the full and exact error message text. When you phone in, don't bother with the initial prompts. What a long while until you are offered the option of talking to a live "service" rep. Explain the problem to them.

Some of the download sites are "fussy" about the product keys they will accept You should even be able to download a trial and use your key to activate it to full function status.

However, my problem has been solved and I am left red-faced and rather embarrassed for making such a fuss but I was very frustrated nonetheless. After some searching I did find the original packaging and it appears that the first download of the version was for a trial i.
I found a hand-written product key in the package that appears to have been given to me by the third party seller to convert it to a full version product.
I applied this and all seems to be now OK. I hadn't remembered this. I guess the memory is first to go with age. Again, thanks. Glad to see it all worked out in the end! This site in other languages x.
